A Message From Alumni President Rob Wheeler

It’s that time of year when many of us are making resolutions…
and struggling to keep them. What is it about resolutions that are so hard to keep? It’s not that they aren’t worth doing, after all, they were important enough to identify and write down in the first place. As successful graduates from one of the nations top engineering schools its not that we don’t have the ability to keep them. So what is it?

I think many of us lose motivation because we don’t have anyone holding us accountable. It’s easy to make excuses to yourself, but how would things be different if we had someone, or a group of friends, to keep us on track? I bet we would keep a lot more of our resolutions!
As alumni of Delta Upsilon we have a great network of brothers to help hold us accountable. Unfortunately many of us fail to utilize this network. As we all start putting pen to paper to write down our resolutions for 2008, let’s not forget to include one last entry: GET INVOLVED WITH THE ALUMNI CHAPTER AND BUILD MY NETWORK OF DELTA UPSILON BROTHERS!

This is also the time of year to look back on a successful 2007 where we celebrated 50 years of building better men at Georgia Tech. We are confident that the next 50 years will be even better! Thanks to everyone who came out to celebrate with us during Homecoming. It was great catching up with those of you who I haven’t seen in years and even better meeting some of you for the first time and making new friends.

Looking forward to 2008, our goals for the alumni chapter are as follows:

  • Start an undergraduate advisory board (with the help of International) consisting of both Georgia Tech DU Alumni as well as other Delta Upsilon brothers in the Atlanta area.
  • Create a formal officer transition process to ease the burden when new officers take over
  • Build our newly created Chapter Education Account (see separate article in this newsletter) to send more undergraduates to DU’s Leadership Institute and increase our scholarship fund
  • Plan at least 5 social events for the year to help build a close knit alumni network. Possible events include a brother-alumni golf tournament, community service day, poker tournaments, Braves/Thrashers game outings, etc.

I would like to wish everyone a wonderful 2008! Please feel free to reach out to me at any time with any comments/concerns or if you would like to get involved.
